Professor Emeritus. Dr Tham Nimal-Raj is a highly experienced, senior NHS General Practitioner. He is the Managing Director of the Harley Street Medical Consultants (national & international) as well as the Director of Community Medical Diagnostics Ultrasound Services.
He has held various positions on the NHS’s Clinical Commissioning Groups board since its inception in 2011, including Interim Accountable Officer and Chief Clinical Officer. He is the Managing Director of the Essex Medical Society (EMS), and is a former council member of the British Medical Association (BMA). In addition, he is provost and professor of New Vision University, Tbilisi, Georgia from 2017.
He has established new medical schools in Carribean, one of his Forte is setting up off shore medical schools.
Prof Nimal-Raj has had several short texts published, including a teaching-book on anatomy and one about interesting cases in ultrasound. He has been a guest speaker at international conferences and is establishing charity work from family funds.
Professor Nimal-Raj (Know Professor Raj) is Provost and Professor of Family Medicine and Anatomy at the New Vision University.
He is a Charismatic leader in the Medical Academics School and in Clinical & Corporate Medicine. He is a Senior Physician in the NHS, holds global positions in corporate ventures and is involved in private medical hospitals. Teaching is his passion and been an ardent tutor of anatomy for medical students. He has also been involved in three Caribbean medical schools since 1996, latterly gaining professor status and has held various key positions at board level such as Dean for 7 years.
Professor Raj is a Senior Partner at Sai Medical Practice in the South East of England and is a highly experienced General Practitioner who is focused on improving delivery of local primary care services to all members of the population within the Essex geographical area.
He is also a General Practitioner working within the Essex Locality Hub and is an elected Board Member of NHS Thurrock Clinical Commissioning Group. This enables Professor Raj to provide an extensive range of primary and secondary care expertise in the areas of commissioning, procurement, and contract management for the overall benefit of the community.
As Interim Chief Accountable Officer and Chief Clinical Officer of Thurrock CCG Professor Raj demonstrated his ability to provide leadership and strategic direction at a very senior level of the NHS. From 2011 to 2013, he was heavily involved in the transition of the then Primary Care Trust to a Clinical Commissioning Group as required by the 2012 Health and Social Care Act. He was instrumental in approving and appointing all staff members such as including Non-Executive Directors and the board including the Chief Operating officer and Chief Finance Officer.
He was instrumental in developing Safeguarding protocols, MDT and GP forums and was a full member of the children maternity/ NHS 111 and clinical integrated committees. Professor Raj developed many pathways including Community DVT and several other community-based services.
He also assisted in the establishment of a physician prescribing course as the CCG prescribing lead in 2004
Professor Raj is currently Director of Lakeside Medical Diagnostics Services who provide valuable community-based ultrasound imaging services at many locations within Essex. In addition, he is the Founder and Managing Director of the Essex Medical Society who were established as a forum for physicians and surgeons to give them the opportunity of meeting together for the exchange of clinical intelligence.
Professor Raj has held posts of Managing Director of the Harley Street Medical Consultants and Queen Anne Street Medical Centre both these organisations provide national and international healthcare services. Further roles included working as a Faculty Board Member for the Essex Royal College of General Practitioners.
Between 1996 and 2006 Professor Raj was the Director, Dean and Professor of the University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine Eustatius in the Caribbean. In 2005 Professor Raj was presented with a gold medallion for outstanding work as Dean in the Caribbean region.
As a member of the University Executive Board, Professor Raj provides enthusiastic leadership to deliver the University’s Strategy. At an operational level he works closely with the University Directors in advancing and implementing the annual and three-year plans for the University. At the strategic level he works closely with the Registrar and Secretary as well as the Directors of the Corporate Services to develop and deliver strategic goals.
